DEG Signal was awarded a significant contract for signalling design in conjunction with platform lengthening on Network Rail’s Wessex route. This was a two-year project to lengthen 50 platforms in the south-west of London to allow 10-car operation for South West Trains services.
Project outline and objective
DEG Signal undertook all the GRIP 5 signalling design for 50 stations, working closely with the principal contractor, C Spencer and multidisciplinary designer, WSP Group. Completion of this project will allow 10-car operation of trains on the following routes: Hounslow Loop Virginia Water to Weybridge Shepperton Branch Hampton Court Branch Waterloo to Woking Chessington South Branch Raynes Park to Epsom Leatherhead and Hinchley Wood to Guildford.
Several of the platforms required signals to be moved and associated pointwork. This necessitated alterations to signalling interlockings and control panels of varying vintages.
Location cases were either renewed or moved depending on the circumstances. Replacement colour light signals were of LED type.
