Project details

Project: Belfast to Bangor

Client: Translink - Northern Ireland Railways

The two-track line between Belfast and Bangor was relaid between Bridge End and Bangor. The line was closed in four stages and the line remaining in service incorporated signalling changes to allow bi-directional working. This enabled a reduced passenger service to be provided throughout the duration of the track relaying work. Track relaying and signalling works were carried out on the closed line during traffic hours.

Provision of bi-directional working required two additional crossovers at Craigavad linking the four separate stages. There was an existing emergency crossover at Rockport which was taken out of use prior to the track relaying work commencing. A new interlocking was provided at Craigavad for the new crossovers and their protecting signals. This was housed within a new Relocatable Equipment Building (REB) at Craigavad Station (closed) and included a local control panel for route setting by a signaller’s agent.

DEG Signal was responsible for all design works for this project, supervision of installation and auditing of testing activities.
