Ensuring that Insulated Rail Joints Do Not Suffer Damage from Stray Traction Return Currents

DEG Signal has supported DEA (Dual Electrified Area) testing undertaken at Blackfriars.

This work was completed as a sub-contractor to S&T Cover for UK Power Networks Services.

A solution has been developed to mitigate Insulated Rail Joint (IRJ) arcing. Our role was to act as the Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) for signalling.

We ensured that the solution wouldn’t have a detrimental effect on the safe operation of the track circuits.

This project will reduce the likelihood of IRJs suffering damage from stray traction return currents, resulting in a more reliable railway.
